This fine example of a Mid 19th century (c1850)printing press is presented in full working order. It is in prime condition and is painted to the original design.
Built by James Salmon of Manchester, England, one of the five licensed manufacturers of this press. The difference between the manufactures being the ornate finish to the casting. The Golden Eagle on top being the common figurehead to the design with the wreath motif above the nameplate being unique to James Salmon.
this press is one of only a few remaining in the UK in such fine condition, the others are mainly located in museums.
The original wooden type would be placed onto the bed then hand inked with the paper being placed over the type. The carriage would be wound in and the pressure bar applied. The carriage would be wound out again to deliver the printed copy.
